The 18′ Islander was one of the most successful inboard models built by Lyman with over 2500 boats built from 1947-1960.   This 1954 18′ Islander was one of 436 built that year and was originally spec’ed with 2 wheels, but may be the only one in existence with 3 wheels.  After purchasing the boat from the original owner in 1959, the second owner obtained the necessary parts from the Lyman factory in Sandusky, OH to install the 3rd wheel.

The boat was purchased in February of 1955 in Mentor, OH at the Smith Boat and Electric Company.  The base price was $2125 and with options the final price came to $2814 (and tax was 3% in 1955!).  Here is the original bill of sale (with address information removed)…

As mentioned the boat was sold in 1959 and the boat remained in that family until 2006.  The boat has been meticulously maintained throughout it’s life.   It was always trailered into the water.  The owner’s daughter told us that she vividly remembers sponging out every drop of water in the bilge after using it!   The bilges are immaculate.

The engine is a 60HP Gray with 616 hours on it.

The boat has a full set of cushions, mooring canvas and bimini top.

If you noticed on the original bill of sale, the boat also was shipped with a toilet located in the middle of the front seat!  Because it discharges directly overboard, it cannot be used though.  It does make quite a conversation piece!

After the father passed away, the boat was unused for several years so they sold it to us in 2006.  We are looking for a good home for the boat while raising money for upcoming capital improvement projects here down at the boatyard.

Please contact us if you are interested in this boat.  There are many more photos below…  Click on the thumbnails below to open up a full size photo.  Click on the number “2” below the thumbnails to get a second set of photos.

About Mike

I pinch myself every day... I can't believe I'm back in Vermilion working at the boatyard! I grew up spending afternoons and summer days working at Moes Marine. I moved to Boston after college and met my wonderful wife, Maura, while living life in the big city and working at Boston BoatWorks. We traveled and volunteered abroad for 9 months in 2009 and then found our way back to our families in Ohio. We are now living in downtown Vermilion with our son, Owen, who visits the boatyard daily at coffee break!
