Launching – 1947 Higgins Sedan Cruiser

1947 Higgins Sedan Cruiser

This boat has an extensive history with our family and the boatyard that we will write and post up here in the near future.  The short story is that this boat was Grandpa’s boat that he owned from 1952 to 1992.  I remember spending a few days a summer when I was very young with Grandma and Grandpa on the Higgins at Put-In-Bay.

After Grandpa sold the boat, the new owner performed a meticulous refit of the interior and exterior.  It was sold after completion to another local owner and then sold again in 2004 to a new owner in the classic boat haven of Clayton, New York.  It sold again a few years later but remained in Clayton.

The current owner of this 1952 24′ Chris Craft Express Cruiser was looking for a new boat that had more interior accommodations for overnight cruising and stumbled upon the Higgins on a brokerage listing.   A few months later, it arrived at Moes Marine on a truck with the help of our friends at Lagoon Marine.

Every time I walk by the Higgins at the dock I do a double-take because I can’t believe Grandpa’s boat is back at the boatyard.  I’m sure Grandpa is smiling too!

About Mike

I pinch myself every day... I can't believe I'm back in Vermilion working at the boatyard! I grew up spending afternoons and summer days working at Moes Marine. I moved to Boston after college and met my wonderful wife, Maura, while living life in the big city and working at Boston BoatWorks. We traveled and volunteered abroad for 9 months in 2009 and then found our way back to our families in Ohio. We are now living in downtown Vermilion with our son, Owen, who visits the boatyard daily at coffee break!
